The Beginning of the Project

Shardhana began with the goal of implementing the Applied Element Method (AEM) as an open-source project.

While the traditional Finite Element Method (FEM) has certain limitations in naturally representing post-failure behavior, AEM drew attention for its ability to simulate more intuitive collapse behavior through element separation and re-contact.

The project was initiated with the intention of directly implementing the core principles of structural analysis and sharing them openly, without relying on proprietary software.

Expansion of Direction

In striving to overcome the limitations of FEM, we came to recognize that AEM may also entail fundamental limitations.

• What is an element?
• Is failure a discontinuity, or a transformation of state?
• Is structural behavior the result of matrix operations, or a continuous process of change?

These questions became the catalyst for expanding the direction of the project.

Transition Toward HEM

Shardhana began by pursuing AEM beyond FEM, and along the way, it evolved toward a new conceptual analysis core: HEM.

HEM interprets an element not merely as a stiffness block, but as a seed-like state unit composed of a Core and a Face.

Core represents the intrinsic material and energy state, while Face represents the boundary through which interaction occurs.

Failure is no longer interpreted as simple “breakage,” but as the reconfiguration and differentiation of states. Collapse is not discontinuity, but part of transformation.

Goals of Shardhana

Shardhana aims to:

• Implement an open-source structural analysis core
• Organize and interpret fundamental FEM theory
• Explore AEM analytical concepts
• Establish HEM as a new analytical methodology
• Develop simulations that approach natural phenomena more closely

Nature is the teacher of Shardhana.

프로젝트의 시작

샤드하나는 처음 AEM(응용요소법)을 오픈소스로 구현해 보자는 목표에서 출발했습니다.

기존 FEM(유한요소법)이 파괴 이후 거동을 자연스럽게 표현하는 데 일정한 한계가 있다면, AEM은 요소의 분리와 재접촉을 통해 보다 직관적인 붕괴 거동을 모사할 수 있다는 점에 주목했습니다.

이 프로젝트는 상용 프로그램에 의존하지 않고, 구조해석의 핵심 원리를 직접 구현하고 공개적으로 공유하는 것을 목표로 시작되었습니다.

방향의 확장

FEM의 한계를 극복하려는 고민 속에서, AEM 역시 근본적인 문제를 내포하고 있을 가능성을 인식하게 되었습니다.

• 요소란 무엇인가?
• 파괴는 단절인가, 아니면 상태 변화인가?
• 구조 거동은 행렬 연산의 결과인가, 아니면 연속적인 변화 과정인가?

이 질문들은 프로젝트의 방향을 확장시키는 계기가 되었습니다.

HEM으로의 전환

Shardhana는 FEM을 넘어 AEM을 추구하며 출발했지만, 그 여정 속에서 HEM이라는 새로운 개념적 해석 코어에 이르게 되었습니다.

HEM은 요소를 단순한 강성 블록이 아니라 중심부(Core)와 형태(Face)를 가진 씨앗 구조와 같은 하나의 상태 단위로 바라봅니다.

중심부는 본질적인 물성 및 에너지 상태를 의미하며, 형태는 외부와 상호작용하는 경계를 의미합니다.

파괴는 더 이상 ‘깨짐’이 아니라, 상태의 재구성과 분화로 해석됩니다. 즉, 붕괴는 단절이 아니라 변화의 한 과정입니다.

샤드하나의 목표

샤드하나는 다음을 지향합니다.

• 구조해석 코어를 오픈소스로 구현
• FEM 기본 이론의 정리 및 해석
• AEM 해석 개념의 탐색
• HEM이라는 새로운 해석 방법의 정립
• 자연현상에 보다 가까이 다가가는 시뮬레이션 구현
